Sex is a topic that people don’t want to discuss in India. Especially when it comes to children, we assume that they don’t need to know about sex because it’s an adult concept. It’s unfortunate that many parents and teachers in India also consider sex a topic that must be swept under the carpet. This has even caused a resistance to sex education in schools around India.

Most of India’s population is highly conservative, and many assume that sex education is not a necessity for children. But, we cannot deny the fact that this culture that we’re so proud of is directly or indirectly causing a lot of suffering in our country.

Research proves that India is one of the countries in the world with the highest rate of child sex abuse. A recent survey by UNICEF states that nearly 10% of girls from India might have been sexually abused, and almost 42% of Indian girls have been sexually abused before their teenage.

Teenage pregnancy is another major problem that India is facing. Again, India is one country that has the most teenage pregnancies in the world. In such a land as ours, unfortunately, sex education is often denied. But why?

Society has failed to understand that sex education does not encourage children to have sex, but it’s more about creating awareness of sex — which is safe and unsafe sex, how to identify good touch and bad touch and what are the biological changes that boys and girls go through as they grow up.

Sex education in schools will help students understand the need for contraceptives and pills to prevent pregnancy. It helps children think about whether they are ready to have sex, bear children and thereby prepares them for the future by teaching them about family planning and healthy pregnancy. For instance, sex education can help teenagers understand the consequences of unsafe sex by giving them sufficient information about STDs.

Therefore, as parents, teachers and leaders we must understand that sex education does not pollute innocent minds, but empowers people to make wise decisions about their sexuality, and live a safe life.
