Heartbreak feels like you’re underwater and you can’t breathe. Everything you knew just disappears before you. The harder you try to hold on, the quicker it gets away from you. It’s not easy to recover from heartbreak, especially when you’re still questioning the cause of the breakup and what went wrong. You spend days feeling lost, unfocused, and to be honest, like sh*t.
People around you, friends and family, tell you to tough it out and move on. But you know it’s easier said than done. There’s a part of you that wants to heal your broken heart, but there’s a part of you that wants to hold on.
So, how do you heal a broken heart?
Channel that pain you’re experiencing into a healing process, but in a fun way. Bollywood movies have proved to be a great medium in the heartbreak section. Even the thriller movies, somehow, have a romantic element to them. Maybe it’s time to take lessons from these movies and heal your broken heart.
Here’s how you heal a broken heart with tips from our very own Bollywood.
1. Scream it out loud.
Instead of burying those feelings of anger and pain inside of you, scream it out loud like Geet (Kareena Kapoor) in Jab We Met. After yelling at her ex-boyfriend who conveniently ditched her, she burned his photograph and flushed him out of her life. A little unconventional, but a good way to start the healing process.
2. Get the closure.
Don’t hold on to those feelings and torture yourself with the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘maybes’. It’s not worth your time. Get the closure by putting the past behind you. Sam (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) were broken when Neha (Priyanka Chopra) didn’t reciprocate those feelings (in Dostana), but they put it behind them and got their closure.
3. Focus on yourself.
You lose a part of yourself in a relationship, and more, after a breakup. Don’t let your broken heart let you stray away from your true self. Rani (Kangana Ranaut) had her heart broken (in Queen) by her fiance, but that didn’t stop her from traveling across the world and focusing on herself and her choices.
4. Don’t be a stalker.
Stalking their social media accounts won’t make you feel better about yourself. The stalking turns into an obsession and soon you’ll end up being a creepy stalker like Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) in Dar. Delete your ex from all your social media accounts and if you can, ban yourself from your Facebook too.
5. Feel some kindness towards your ex.
It’s not easy to harbor feelings of affection for your ex and that’s understandable. But holding on to that anger slows down the healing process. When Meera’s (Kajol) car breaks down (Dilwale), Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) extends a helping hand despite the tension from their former relationship. Let go of that anger, focus on happiness, and wish the same for your ex.
6. Write the story of your former relationship.
Write down the story of your former relationship in third person and see the change in perspective. It sounds silly, but reading it from a different angle gives you valuable perspective. Karan (Saif Ali Khan) faced similar hardships (in Hum Tum) and penned down those memories in a comic. When you put your relationship on paper, you see what went wrong.
7. Take your time to move on.
Moving on isn’t easy. When you’re used to being with someone for so long, the sudden detachment and lack of affection hurts. Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) knew pining after Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) wouldn’t get their relationship anywhere and she moved on, only to find someone who was truly worth her love and time.
